Acoustical Experience: Highways and Roads

  • Road Traffic Noise

About This Project

Projects have included area-wide noise monitoring/modelling programs, development and implementation of legislation and testing procedures, and most commonly impact assessment and the design and specification of roadside barriers where warranted. The following are selected examples of relevant project experience involving noise from road traffic:

David Avenue Connector

Coquitlam, BC
Detailed assessment and design input for noise barriers for road extension and two new bridges on an urban traffic artery upgrade in this municipality.

Golden Ears Bridge Project

Surrey, Langley, Pitt Meadows & Maple Ridge, BC
Detailed design assessment of operations and construction noise mitigation requirements for contractor. Developed detailed Cadna/A computer model to assess impacts at more than 150 residential locations for this $800 million bridge plus interchanges and roadways project. Post-construction noise monitoring and insertion loss testing performed to ANSI S12.8 standard.

Low Level Road Project

North Vancouver, BC
Preliminary and detailed design environmental noise and vibration impact assessments and noise mitigation design for road and rail project. Included baseline monitoring, detailed Cadna/A computer modelling to assess impacts at 100+ residences and to design noise mitigation, and extensive public consultation.

North Fraser Perimeter Road

Port Coquitlam and Pitt Meadows, BC
Preliminary design environmental assessment and CEAA report of construction and operations noise including baseline noise monitoring. Developed Cadna/A computer model to assess impacts at 850 residential locations using MoT Noise Policy.

Port Mann/Highway 1 Project

Metro Vancouver, BC
Detailed design assessment of operations and construction noise mitigation requirements for this $3.3 billion bridge plus interchanges and roadways project. Baseline and post-construction noise monitoring at more than 70 locations. Construction noise and vibration prediction and monitoring. Detailed Cadna/A computer modelling at more than 1000 residential and educational locations to assess impacts and design noise mitigation.

Sea-to-Sky Highway Improvement Project

West Vancouver & Squamish, BC
Detailed design review of contractor impact assessment for BC Ministry of Transportation & Infrastructure for this $600 million project, including baseline noise monitoring and extensive Cadna/A modelling and public consultation regarding quiet pavement, noise wall and residential mitigation options.

South Surrey Interchange

Surrey, BC
Computer modelling of proposed interchange on Highway 99, prediction of noise impact, baseline and post-project noise monitoring, evaluation of noise mitigation measures and participation in meetings with affected residents.

Winfield to Oyama Project

Kelowna, BC
Detailed design assessment of noise mitigation requirements for new highway based on baseline noise monitoring and Cadna/A modelling of future noise impacts at more than 300 residential locations.

Traffic Noise Monitoring

Metro Vancouver, BC
More than (100) 24-hour noise measurements have been carried out over the past few years using unmanned, computer-based instruments to assess the suitability of sites proposed for residential development.
