21 Sep Co-op Experience at BKL: Learning, Adapting, and Solving Real-World Problems
a term built on variety
Paul was struck by how much he learned during his time with us. Because the work was so varied, each project brought something different. Some days involved field work, while others focused on calculating noise data or helping manufacture parts needed for the work. That range exposed him to both the technical and practical sides of consulting.
Paul also valued the team environment that supported that learning. As he reflected on his term, he was consistently impressed by how willing people were to answer questions, explain unfamiliar concepts, and share what they knew. That openness helped make a specialized field feel more accessible.
As Paul put it, “The work here is extremely varied, and the people are always happy to teach. I’ve been constantly able to learn new things throughout my term.”
At the start of his co-op, Paul found the terminology and physics behind acoustics challenging. Over time, he grew much more comfortable, largely because of the support of our team. That combination of hands-on work and mentorship helped him build a stronger understanding of both acoustics and vibration over the course of his term.
Learning Through Real-World Problem Solving
Paul’s most memorable experience came during a project that required vibration monitors to be installed in holes that would be submerged during high tide. To make the installation possible, the team vacuum-sealed the monitors and successfully placed them underwater. For Paul, it was a strong example of the kind of practical problem-solving that happens in the field and of how rewarding it can be to see a solution work in real time.
Experiences like that also showed him that consulting requires flexibility. While some aspects of the work connected to what he had learned in school, much of what he encountered with us was new. He found that plans often change, and that adapting quickly and working through new problems is an important part of the job.
Developing Technical Skills in a Specialized Field
Paul also had the opportunity to strengthen his coding skills, an area he was especially eager to develop. For him, the most rewarding part of the co-op was being able to focus on skills he wanted to improve and apply them in a practical way, including helping optimize processes in the office.
By the end of his eight months, Paul left with new technical knowledge, greater confidence, and a stronger interest in pursuing a career in acoustics.
Advice for Future Co-op Students
Because acoustics is a relatively niche field, Paul noted that many students may not have much direct experience before starting a co-op. His advice to future co-op students is straightforward: be enthusiastic, stay curious, and work hard. The learning curve is steep, but a willingness to ask questions and take on unfamiliar challenges goes a long way. For students interested in gaining real project experience in acoustics, a co-op term can be a meaningful way to explore the field and discover where their interests lie.
